The Marrier surname comes from a French verb, which means 'to marry'. It was the name of a lower aristocratic French family in the 15th or 16th centuries, under the French King Louis the XIV. The family were granted the prestige of a baronial title ['of Unienville - a small town in France] and the addition of the titled name of d'Unienville (and at a later date a third aristocratic titled surname was added but discarded in the 20th century as it made the surname too cumbersome to write).

Marie Claude Antoine Marrier, Baron d'Unienville (1766-1831), fought in the Napoleonic wars and later became colonial archivist of the island of Mauritius. The surname is still most prevalent today on the island nations of Mauritius, Reunion and Seycelles - with families migrating to Australia, (South) Africa and other parts of the world.
